If things carry on the way they’ve started…

Massimo Tabarelli, Sports Director of Team NOB BMC – Selle Italia, surveys the beginning of a competitive season that promises to deliver great satisfaction judging by the initial results. Let’s talk about the key events and team goals for 2017.

How has the start of the season been? Any issues? Satisfying outcomes?

The season has just begun and I think I can safely say it has started off on the right foot! Sure, it’s still early to make predictions or get carried away with hasty judgements, but if things carry on the way they’ve started … we’re hopeful for what lies ahead. Our top cross country riders, Olympian Andrea Tiberi and the Italian Under-23 champion Gioele Bertolini, have already shown themselves as world class competitors in the first trials of the Internazionali d’Italia Series. Our road race athletes haven’t yet had the chance to show their mettle in competition, but preparations are proceeding smoothly, morale is high and our high-prestige goals are definitely attainable.

Goals and key events in 2017? Which race best suits your profile and gives you the best hopes of a good result?

The team will follow two different goals to fully exploit the riders’ strengths, so they can compete in the races best suited to them and thus aim for best possible result. The guys specialising in cross country will certainly go in for all the events on the national calendar, starting with the Internazionali d’Italia Series or XCO circuit, the most prestigious in Italy. From here on the bar gets even higher, as we take part in the European trials of the UCI World Cup, the world’s biggest mountain bike competition. Obviously we’ll also be aiming for national titles and we want the highest number of riders in the national team to defend Italy’s colours at the World Championships. The guys who do the mass-start, middle distance and marathon road races will be aiming to prove themselves at national level to show the national coach they deserve to wear a blue jersey ahead of the European and world championships.
