New materials: the fabulous Graphene

The next-generation tyres are very smooth-running, durable and safe thanks to Graphene, the carbon-derived material with extraordinary characteristics.

But aside from tyres, all cycling is now undergoing a sweeping scientific revolution, with the widespread use of increasingly sophisticated technologies. Just think of the new futuristic SP01 saddle by Selle Italia, constructed in advanced materials and with a definite “aerospace” feel.

The revolution often starts from the bottom up, you know? But who could have imagined that one of the greatest innovations in the world of cycling in recent years would be in tyres? Lower than that…

Tyres are tyres, you say; what big novelty could be introduced in an object made of such a simple material?

Well…what would you say about a tyre that’s extraordinarily resistant, virtually indestructible, becomes harder and smoother-running when you increase speed while also becoming softer and more elastic when you brake, meaning it has better grip and is safer?

This is not science fiction – this technological wonder really exists. But what’s it made of? Nothing mysterious, just a special compound of normal tyre rubber and Graphene, a recently discovered material that comes in the form of a very thin sheet of pure carbon atoms, 200 times stronger than steel and 6 times more flexible.

In practice it’s as hard as diamond and as flexible as plastic.

On the road

Anyone who has tired these new tyres knows that, as well as making punctures thing of the past (no mean feat!), they give a totally new riding experience, with an amazing feeling of smoothness.

During normal road use, the impression is that as speed increases, the rolling resistance of the tyres decreases.

The “secret” is in the characteristics of the Graphene nanoparticles used the tread compound: these are inherently oriented in the same direction, which in this case is parallel to the direction of travel; and it’s this that creates the minimal friction. But the act of braking causes a slight deformation in the tyre material, causing the particles to become misaligned for a fraction of a second, thereby increasing the grip needed in that instance.

Science and Technology

Science at the service of cycling. The future – or rather the present – is now this.

The sudden appearance of the latest technology in a sport that has always been “faithful to tradition” is really revolutionising the technical possibilities of the two-wheeled world.

Not just from the bottom up, as we said before: going up just a little more you get to the saddle; and now, the brand new SP01 by Selle Italia means the same humble saddle has gone “out of this world” any way you look at it. This saddle in fact combines the best features of lightness and strength of carbon, through a special aerospace-derived production process.

With the SP01, Selle Italia continuous research has come up with a totally innovative, almost “automotive” line that features a rear structure divided into two independent parts; these rest on a special “suspension link” and efficiently accommodate the movement of the pelvis during pedalling to provide maximum comfort and performance.

Tyres that improve performance and saddles that look like they’re from a spaceship – we always said cycling is a magical sport …
