On 14 September we officially entered the atmosphere of the Giro d’Italia and it promises not to be any Giro. The presentation of what will be the 100th edition of the historic Corsa Rosa (Pink Race) was held in the Buzzati Hall of the RCS MediaGroup in Milan. Selle Italia, traditional partner of the cycling event par excellence in our country, could not miss the event.
The first bits of news emerged immediately. The Centennial Edition, whose entire program will be unveiled on 25 October, will cover the period between Friday 5 and Sunday 28 May 2017. The honour of opening such an illustrious edition will be entrusted to Sardinia, and it will be the fourth time in its history, following 1961, 1991 and the team time trial that opened the 2007 Edition. There will be three legs: the Alghero-Olbia (203 km); the Olbia-Tortolì (208 km) and the Tortolì-Cagliari (148 km).
Although very little was revealed about an itinerary that promises to be special, it is certain that the 100th Giro d’Italia will embrace our peninsula in its entirety, as was apparent from the words of the Director of Cycling at RCS Sport, Mauro Vegni: “It will be an event that will recount the history of our country, with an equitable distribution of stages for sprinters, finishers and climbers.”
The idea is to make the most of an event that, like few others, knows how to raise the enthusiasm of the crowds, turning it into an even more spectacular and exhilarating experience for the people: “We will try to make the Giro even better, also for its sponsors”, was the comment made by the Chairman Cairo.
A real challenge to be taken up for the most deserving of occasions.
