On a cold, rainy Sunday, Selle Italia sponsored Matteo Rabottini brought Farnese Vini-Selle Italia
the breakthrough win they had been seeking at the 2012 Giro d’Italia atop the Pian dei Resinelli
climb. The courageous Rabottini finished a 151km breakaway by holding off a fast-finishing
Joaquim Rodriguez of Selle Italia sponsored Katusha Team, who recovered the Maglia Rosa
after losing it yesterday.
Rabottini, a 24 year old from Pescara is a second year pro who is a specialist in long breakaways
who is nicknamed “Rambo.” Post-stage, Rabottini explained “Today was really, really hard but our
team has been attacking all during the Giro, trying to win a stage. We did it today and I have to thank
Luca Scinto and my entire team.for the great support they gave me.”
Katusha Team’s Rodriguez said “I felt great today and am happy to have recovered the Maglia Rosa.
Usually on days like this I am not at my best but today was different.” Rodriguez’s Katusha Team
teammate was 3rd at :23″.
